How to limit Instagram and TikTok time on iPhone
In-app reminders, Screen Time, Focus modes and per-app breaks, compared, so you can pick the one that fits.
Instagram, TikTok and YouTube are built to keep you watching. The good news is that your iPhone gives you several ways to push back. Here are four, from the gentlest to the strictest, and how they work together.
1. Use the apps' own reminders
Both Instagram and TikTok have built-in time management settings in their account settings, where you can set a daily reminder or take-a-break nudge. They are easy to set up, but they're also easy to dismiss, and they only cover one app at a time.
2. Set a Screen Time App Limit
- Go to Settings › Screen Time › App Limits › Add Limit.
- Open the Social or Entertainment category and tick Instagram, TikTok or YouTube.
- Choose a daily time, keep Block at End of Limit on and tap Add.
The catch: when the limit is reached you can tap Ignore Limit and keep going. A Screen Time passcode stops that, but then the app is simply locked for the rest of the day, which many people find too harsh and end up disabling.

3. Hide the apps with a Focus
A Focus can hide apps and silence their notifications during certain hours. Create one in Settings › Focus, choose which apps can notify you, and pick a Home Screen page without the social apps. It's great for work hours or evenings, but it doesn't measure how long you've spent.
4. Give each app its own rhythm with breaks
Instead of one daily wall, a break-based rule pauses an app after a set amount of use and lets you back in after a short break. PawBreak does exactly this, using Apple's Screen Time framework:
- A rule for each app. For example, Instagram: 20 minutes of use, then a 5 minute break. YouTube: 45 minutes, then 10.
- Counted separately. If you switch from Instagram to TikTok, TikTok's time is counted on its own and it gets its own break.
- Several breaks at once. Two apps can be on a break at the same time, each with its own countdown.
- Always visible. The countdown sits in the Dynamic Island and on the Lock Screen, with the cat you chose for that app.
Which method should you choose?
- You just want awareness: start with the apps' own reminders.
- You need a hard daily cap: use Screen Time App Limits with a passcode.
- You want certain hours phone-free: add a Focus.
- You want to scroll less without being locked out all day: use per-app breaks.
These combine well. Many people use a Focus for the evening and per-app breaks during the day.
A tip that helps with any method
Decide what you'll do in the break before it starts: stand up, drink water, reply to one real message. A break with a plan feels like a reward rather than a loss.
